Things to do in Rotorua Activities For Tourists 2
Rotorua sightseeing – magical walk – Powerful waterfalls – beautiful bush
A lovely lady Sharron from New Plymouth ventured to Rotorua to have a Romiromi traditional Maori Massage at Wikitoria Maori Healing.
She liked it so much she came back a few weeks later to do a Maori Healing Workshop that we also offer at Lakeside Retreat.
The next day she wanted to relax and enjoy some Rotorua activities. So this is what I suggested for her.
Combine Rotorua sightseeing with your early morning exercise and take a magical walk along the Kaituna River that flows from Lake Rotoiti out to Maketu.
Truly majestic though a little hard to find.
Take road on left after Okere Store and not far up on right turn into big car park with information board.
It’s my favourite walk close to home and an easy 45 minutes there and back!
Powerful waterfalls and beautiful bush (rimu, tanekaha, nikau, kauri, totara, kawakawa, rangiora) line the walking track to the trout pool and old bridge.
Spot a local fisherman catch a rainbow trout or spot the rafters sliding and tipping down the waterfalls – extremely popular with adventurist people from all nations.
For a closer view you can walk down the historic Hinemoa’s Steps cut in 1907 that lead to the caves where women and children were hidden in days of old.
This Rotorua attraction is only five minutes drive from where you can have a traditional Maori Massage and very conveniently situated two minutes from my favourite café in Rotorua. Okere Falls Store and Café is patronised by locals, holiday makers and travellers. For me it has character, great service, is eco friendly and most important good food and coffee! My favourite snack is a grilled flatbread with artichoke, basil, parma ham and mozzarella served with homemade tamarillo chutney – yum!
Okere Store is renown for its huge selection of organic foods, local cheeses, meats, vegetables, small goods, pasta, wines, icecream and handcrafted artisan breads. There’s also a German beer garden out back and a pet pig! No need to go into town if you are a local.
The covered veranda out front with its long rustic table and convivial atmosphere is a great place to share food, read the papers and meet new people. Open 7.30am to 7pm seven days a week ! You can also pick up a Wikitoria Maori Healing Flyer there or friendly staff will tell you how to find us at Kahukura Retreat. …. Ka kite!
