When someone in your family loses their life through suicide your life changes forever .
New Zealand now has the highest youth suicide rate in the developed world. The highest proportion are young Māori men. Suicide is the highest cause of death in New Zealand of 16-24 year olds…sad and scary statistics.
A new dramatized documentary film MAUI”S HOOK released recently has raised attention and awareness to this issue. Interviews with Māori families who have lost loved ones to suicide reveal the huge emotional impact it has had on each and every family member. They share their stories openly and honestly , their deepest feelings, fears and grief.
We follow them on a healing journey to Cape Reinga, the northern most part of NZ where in our Māori culture when we pass our spirits depart to join Hinenui Te Po ..guardian of death (her other aspect being Hine Titama -Goddess of Dawn light) before reuniting with our ancestors.
Maui’s Hook for me was about acceptance, releasing and eventual freedom for whanau who had lost their loved ones.
On the marae where the families stop on their journey north they share their own personal experiences of loss, emotional upheaval and their huge life changes . Once at their destination through Māori ceremony they could truly say goodbye to their loved ones and release the heaviness they were carrying, shifting in time into acceptance and peace.
I was humbled today to unexpectedly treat a young woman who had suffered from depression since age of seventeen and contemplated suicide age 30. Now aged 33 she told me that when she had suicidal thoughts she’d taken herself to a café to be around people then went to a doctor and psychiatrist who prescribed medication . A fortunate path though she still felt depressed from time to time.
I looked at her energy centres that were all closed down apart from one -a strong indication that she was not present in her body . As a traditional Māori healing practitioner I explained to her how we look at a person to see where there are blockages and try to unravel the circumstances that may have led to the catalyst of the ‘shut down’ .
We discussed how easy it is without even knowing to take on other people’s problems and dense energies that don’t belong to us and how easy it is not to love ourselves and feel not loved.
When I saw her energy centres closed I knew there was a kehua(extraneous energy) that was trying to ‘run’ her. She agreed that she wanted that ‘thing’ out . We also have a saying that the person is not in the ‘driver’s seat’ often reflected in the eyes that look like they aren’t at home in the body.
I explained that in times of trauma , big drug and or alcohol use our wairua(spirit) that’s meant to be safe and at home in the body can ‘jump out’ leaving a person feeling vulnerable and unsafe. Portals in the auric and etheric body can open creating a passage for kehua to enter. They can feed on the organs of the body impacting on the spiritual, mental and or emotional aspects of the body.
So now it was time to get the young woman on to the table and do a healing treatment based on a traditional Māori bodywork called Romiromi that is always supported by kaupare (ancient prayer) and the ancestors who are our link to IO our Māori name for Source, God , Universe.
She was ready and after our korero trusted in the process. I know my job was to simply ground her and be a conduit to bring her back into her body and her divine self. Romiromi works on many levels through whakapapa connection and the natural vibrations of Paptuanuku(Earth mother) and Ranginui (Sky father)and their continual ebb and flow and unconditional aroha .
The person is in a tapu(sacred) state during a Romiromi treatment. The body is opened up energetically so that the denser energies not belonging to the person can be released . The mauri (life essence and higher aspect of the spirit) can then come home where it belongs in the body to do its job of balancing and synchronising the subtle energies of the person. The portals are closed down keeping the person safe and in balance and closer to their original vibration.
On finishing I tested the energy centres again with my pounamu pendulum and was delighted to see them all spinning open ! The young woman felt fantastic and asked if she could come to a workshop . I gave her some tools and mantras to help her keep safe and grounded and bid her farewell. Sunday afternoon full of gratitude for this special work . Tihei mauri ora !
